Chapter 8

Thea

My teeth rattled as the car bounced over the rough road, jostling me. Sweat poured into my eyes, and my entire body ached from being curled into a fetal position.

I was in hell, stuffed in a trunk with no emergency latch by a man I’d called a friend. Terror clawed at my resolve, shredding me from the inside out.

My only comfort was the small knife I clutched in one fist. It was the one I’d kept in my boot. A girl who lived in New Orleans needed some way to defend herself. The attack had been too quick for me to reach it before I’d been stuffed in the blue Chevy, but now it was going to save me. One way or another, once we stopped and the psycho popped the trunk, it was game over. He was going to get what was coming to him. I refused to be anyone’s victim.

My determination slowly morphed into desperation, and my breathing became shallow as nausea made my mouth water. The panic I’d been holding at bay bubbled up, nearly choking me. By the time the car stopped, I was out of my mind, adrenaline coursing through my veins. There was no coherent thought except survival.

The trunk opened.

At the first sight of moonlight, I jerked up onto my knees, seeing nothing but a large shadow hovering over me, and I lunged, jamming the knife right between the eyes of my captor. My momentum threw me forward and I toppled over the bumper of the car, right on top of... Hannah?

I stared into the lifeless eyes of my college friend. The one I’d killed.

“Hannah!” I cried, and when she didn’t respond, I started to scream.

“Thea!” A sharp voice followed by strong hands gripping my arms startled me out of the nightmare. “Wake up, sweetheart. It’s okay. I’m right here. You’re safe.”

Sitting straight up, I gasped in a breath, nearly choking on my sobs.

“Shh, sweetheart. It’s all right. Hannah’s fine. She’s safe with Silas. It’s just a bad dream.”

Darien’s voice penetrated my awareness as I blinked, letting the familiar room come into focus. The bright morning sun shone through the open window, illuminating the sparsely furnished bedroom.

Besides the queen-sized bed, there was only one small dresser and a hamper in the corner. Darien’s bedroom. The place I’d slept for the past week. Where I’d made love to Darien the night before. I hadn’t been taken. I was safe. Here in Darien’s arms, right where I was supposed to be.

It had been the same nightmare. The same one that had been waking me up all week. Only this was slightly different. In all the others I’d missed my target and had ended up stripped naked and shoved in a human-sized cage with Will taunting me. Why had I dreamed of Hannah? She’d been the one to save me.

“I’m sorry,” I said, my voice hoarse.

“You have nothing to be sorry for.” He brushed a lock of hair out of my eyes.

I met his dark, concerned eyes and shook my head, anger pushing out my fear.
